Stepping Stones
Finished Size - 64"x64" (Twin/Large lap)
This is an original design by Dana Jones. This is a very simple quilt, made up entirely of squares and rectangles. It is strip-pieced, so should go together in a day or less (I made two of the quilt tops, despite a toddler and an infant, in three days).
Quilt Notes - I used four colors for this design, but you might want to play with different color values. The quilt shapes are simple enough to use flannel, and would be a nice, easy snuggle/throw for the sofa. Basically, the whole quilt is made of the same block, with two different colors alternating in the larger patch of each. I have included strip-piecing directions where possible, but if you prefer to create a quilt using scraps or fat quarters, you will need to adjust the directions to suit your circumstances. This quilt has NO BORDERS, so it could easily be enlarged to fit a larger bed size with the addition of borders.
Fabric Requirements:
These measurements presume you are using 44-45" wide fabric unless otherwise indicated.
Pink - 1-1/8 yard
Green - 1-1/8 yard
Purple - 1 yard
Tan - 1 yard
Batting - 72" x 72"
Binding - 5/8 yard (if you cut 2-1/2" strips) or 7/8 yard (if you cut 3-1/2" strips)
1. Prewash all fabrics. Test for color-fastness.
2. From the pink material, cut four 8-1/2" strips. From this, cut 32 4-1/2"x8-1/2" rectangles.
3. From the green material, cut four 8-1/2" strips. From this, cut 32 4-1/2"x8-1/2" rectangles.
4. From the purple material, cut eight 4-1/2" strips.
5. From the tan material, cut eight 4-1/2" strips.
6. Sew each of the purple strips to a tan strip, lengthwise, producing 8 stripsets like those shown below. Press the seams toward the purple.

7. From the stripsets you created in step 6, cut units that are 4-1/2"x8-1/2", as shown. You need 64 of these units.

8. Sew the units from step 7 to the rectangles you cut in steps 2 and 3, to make four-patch variations. You will have 64 total, 32 of each type shown below. The blocks should measure 8-1/2" unfinished.

9. Sew the blocks together in 8 rows of 8 blocks each. Refer to the picture above to make sure you rotate the blocks accurately, and be sure to press the seams in alternating directions
10. Quilt and bind as usual.
